Pets aren’t cheap but boy howdy, are they entertaining.

Our middle cal Puppy is in her pre-golden years at roughly 15 yrs old now, but she’s done this thing with stuffed catnip toys since her very kittenish days, when she was still narrow-bellied and fleet-footed enough to get stuck in the drop-ceiling tiles when J. and I lived in the basement at my friend Deb’s house.

Puppy carries small stuffed toys around the house. This happens mostly at night, and the toys usually show up in the morning in the hallway outside my bedroom or occasionally in the hallway outside J’s bedroom.

It usually happens because one or both of the humans have had enough of the three cats covering our airways while we sleep ~ we just need a no-cat night’s sleep to get back to feeling less frustrated with sharing the bed. Fidget is a good sleeper but it takes her what seems like forever to dig dig scruff scruff adjust turn flip flop flop again until she’s settled. Puppy usually demands to begin the end of the night with J. first, have a little cuddle, then she leaves him to sit and stare at me until I retire to bed. Then she races to my bedroom and hops onto the bed to position herself by my hip. Pet pet pet, then after no more than 15 minutes she’s gone to who knows where for the rest of the night. Artemis has become a geriactric night wailer – it’s as though he’s lost his way from living room to bedroom and he howls something fierce (the hunting meowl if that’s any indication to those of you who have cats and who will probably be familiar with, sound-wise). In the mornings after nights when the door has been closed to them Puppy will smash her paws at the hollow-core bedroom door, which until I figure it out I thought was my child asking for permission to enter and I’d finally crawl out of bed in a huff to open the door for what I thought was J., only to meet a very short wide tortie with an attitude.

Many years ago J. begged me and begged me to give him quarters for one of those digger toy vending machines (back in the day where they let you keep trying until you picked something up, even if it was the dumb spider bracelet. I gave him two quarters as we left the no-longer-standing t K-Mart, J. set to work to collect his two promised items. One of the items he won (and gave to me as a present) was a small stuffed Barney Rubble doll. He’s creepy as all hell (a stuff doll with a 5 o’clock shadow?!) but he’s so cute and J. was so proud that I kept it.

Puppy now owns Barney, along with the above retro mouse collection. It is usually Barney hanging out at my door (in the living room, in the water dish, in the food bowls, dangling from the cat tree, etc.). Gotta say, it took a long time to reduce the shock effect of *that face* staring up from the floor in the morning when I was groggily headed up and out of sleep for the first cup of coffee.

Puppy doesn’t often carry more than one toy to any one spot, so when I found these both in front of the toilet today I had to wonder what point she might have been trying to make by her mouse placement..

if you have a kitty and you love them, you’ll buy them a contraption similar to this. i’ve already learned another name for it, but mine was the kitty korner komber (kkk, go dirty south!). the little compartment holds catnip, and beans and tima were f.r.e.a.k.i.n.g. out. beans is always more affected, as evidenced by his glistening, bright red nose in some of these pictures. since i had the starburst filter still on, he even has a twinkle in his eyes. ^_^ silly high kitty.
